This meeting, which is part of the Series of seminars on Primary Health Care with a territorial perspective, will discuss national quality and patient safety policies within the framework of the Primary Health Care strategy and the experiences and challenges for the Region of the Americas.

Objective(s) of the meeting: 

This event aims to create a space for regional reflection and debate on the challenges in designing and implementing quality and patient safety policies, emphasizing the inclusion of the PHC strategy and coordination with other health policies and programs. Additionally, it seeks to initiate a discussion on the challenges related to monitoring and evaluating the impact of plans and strategies, incorporating a territorial perspective to identify gaps, needs and opportunities for improvement.

Also, the event intends to provide a space for sharing experiences and challenges in the development and implementation of national policies, strategies and plans for quality and patient safety in the Region.

  • Welcome Remarks: Ernesto Báscolo, Unit Chief, Primary Health Care and Integrated Service Delivery, (PAHO).
  • Presentation of the situation of national quality policies and plans in the Region of the Americas: Jonás Gonseth, Regional Advisor on Quality of Health Systems and Services, (PAHO)
  • Development of a framework for analyzing the quality of health systems within the framework of the primary care strategy: Berta Maliqi, Unit Head for Quality of Care, (WHO).
  • Country round table: Challenges in the design and implementation of quality policies, strategies or plans in the Region.
  • Costa Rica: the experience of developing a quality strategy and plan.
  • Paraguay: experience in policy implementation (2017-2030) and quality strategy launched in 2021.
  • Colombia: experience in the evaluation and monitoring of quality policies.
  • Announcement from Chile: Importance of the 6th Global Summit in the patient safety agenda.
