Immediate contraception post obstetrical event (ICPOE) - English version - 2021 (Ext. 2023)

Introduction

Universal access to effective and modern contraception methods ensures that all adults and adolescents can avoid the adverse health and socioeconomic consequences of unintended pregnancy and have a satisfying sexual life.

The virtual course on Immediate Contraception Post-Obstetric Event (ICPOE) is aimed at doctors and midwives who work in hospitals wherein care is provided to pregnant women during labor and to women in abortion situations.

The Course is divided into 2 parts: the first part is provided in a self-guided modality and is complemented by the second part, which is provided in a tutored modality and consists of a simulation and a supervised final clinical practice. Upon completion, a competence acquisition certificate will be issued.

Having this type of course available will allow healthcare professionals to acquire the knowledge and skills they need in order to improve the quality of the care they provide, expanding the exercise of the sexual and reproductive rights of the population.

The current situation, especially within the context of the restrictions on movement imposed due to the COVID 19 pandemic, makes the virtual approach to these issues particularly relevant.

Teaching Strategies

The course will use teaching resources and tools from the virtual platform to promote learning linked to practical performance, by means of examples with interactive exercises that will allow participants to move through the different modules.

Purpose of the Course

There is evidence on interventions that are beneficial for the reduction of maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality, such as Immediate Contraception Post-Obstetric Event (ICPOE) using long-lasting reversible contraception methods. Having a course with an initial virtual modality and a subsequent tutored modality including low-fidelity simulation and a clinical application will make it easier for healthcare team members to gain access to knowledge and skills that will translate into abilities, which, in turn, will improve the quality of the care they provide, expanding the exercise of the sexual and reproductive rights of the population. Relying on a group of certified trainers who complete the three stages of training will allow moving forward in this direction.

The current situation, especially within the context of the restrictions on movement imposed due to the COVID 19 pandemic, makes the initial approach to these issues through a virtual modality particularly relevant and convenient with the purpose of sustaining and strengthening the provision of quality care and essential services.

Learning Objectives

Main objective: To teach trainers and healthcare professionals who are qualified to insert IUDs and subdermal implants how to offer counseling on these methods and provide them immediately after an obstetric event.

Specific Objectives:

• To update the knowledge about the medical eligibility criteria for using long-lasting contraception methods after an obstetric event, according to the World Health Organization's publication of 2015.
• To develop competencies through simulated practices in pelvic models and low-fidelity simulation, as well as clinical practice on how to provide contraception counseling and insert IUDs and subdermal implants both in post-partum and post-abortion situations.
• To identify infection prevention practices during the insertion of IUDs and implants after an obstetric event.
• To characterize the different long-lasting contraception methods that are recommended.

Course Recipients

This course is mainly aimed at healthcare professionals who assist women in abortion situations and during deliveries, and who are qualified to insert IUDs and implants.

Course Load and Dedication

The course is open and available at the CVSP (Public Health Virtual Campus).

Because it is a self-learning course, participants can regulate their hours and the time they will invest in completing it. The estimated time for completing all the modules and the final evaluation is 8 hours.
