Interprofessional Education and Team-Based care

Introduction

Interprofessional Education (IPE) occurs when two or more professions learn with, from and about each other to improve collaboration and the quality of care (CAIPE, 2002). IPE is an important teaching strategy that prepares professionals from diverse backgrounds to collaborate and provide team-based people-centred health care. This course titled Interprofessional Education and Team-Based Care helps participants understand the underlying concepts of IPE and team-based care and apply them to their local ecosystem. A team-based collaborative approach to health care has been shown to improve the quality of care and improve patient safety. Such collaborative practice will require a healthcare professional to exhibit specific competencies that need to be introduced and strengthened during the academic phase of the healthcare professional. At the end of the course, participants will be able to develop a strategy to integrate IPE into the curricula at their respective academic institutions and interprofessional practice (IPP) into their local healthcare ecosystems.

Educational approach

Teaching resources and virtual platform tools will be used to improve meaningful learning linked to theoretical and practical performance through user-responsive content and activities that will allow progress through the different modules of the training program.

Course purpose

  • Introduce course participants to the concept of IPE and highlight the role of IPE and collaborative practice in providing quality patient-centred care
  • Introduce course participants to the core competencies of IPE
  • Equip participants with an essential toolkit for planning and development of an IPE module.
  • Guide participants towards the development of a strategy to integrate IPE and IPP into their own academic institutions and local healthcare ecosystem

Target audience

Individuals working in Health professions education (HPE) institutions and involved in the training of Health Professionals including pre-service and in-service training. We aim to attract different disciplines in academia as well as in the service environments. We also hope to attract participants in fields beyond regulated health professions (doctors, dentists, pharmacists and paramedics), such as individuals working in social care and others working in the service environment (managers, decision-makers...)

Objectives

Upon completion of this course, participants will be able to:

  • Identify the importance of IPE and its role in providing team-based care.
  • Appraise the factors that contribute to the sustainability of IPE and team-based care initiatives.
  • Understand “collective impact” as an engagement and convening tool to unite different interprofessional health sectors together on a common problem, solution, and mutually reinforcing activities.
  • Apply the concepts into a strategy to apply within their own academic institution and regional healthcare ecosystem.

Duration/Workload

The course is open and available in the Virtual Campus for Public Health. As it is a self-learning course, participants can administer the time they dedicate to complete the different modules. The Program is assigned a total of 7 hours, including the estimated time to complete the units and module assessments.
