PAHO Director urges faster progress toward universal health in the Americas
The goal of “universal health” should be within reach in the Americas – a region that has been a world leader in health progress. But stepped-up action and investments are needed to speed progress toward universal health, said the Director of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), Carissa F. Etienne, during the opening ceremony of the 57th PAHO Directing Council.

"The Global Monitoring Report on Universal Health Coverage shows that your region stands out as a global leader," said Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, Director-General, WHO. "The Regional Compact on Primary Health Care, launched in April this year, with the 30-30-30 target, is a major step in the right direction. I applaud the emphasis you have put on strengthening stewardship and governance in health."
Countries agree plans to increase organ donation and transplant, promote health and improve health information systems
Ministers and high-level health authorities from the Americas, participating in the third day of the 57th PAHO Directing Council, agreed on a plan to increase organ donations and transplants in an effort to meet demand.

The Plan of Action sets out a people- and community-centered approach that focuses on overcoming persisting barriers to equitable access to quality care. To ensure the delivery of comprehensive health services based on national contexts, needs, vulnerabilities and priorities, the Plan proposes three strategic lines of action.

Delegates to the Pan American Health Organization’s 57th Directing Council were briefed on PAHO’s efforts to increase countries’ access to medicines for viral hepatitis C through the PAHO Strategic Fund.
PAHO offers its support so that primary health care forms the basis of health systems
PAHO Director Carissa F. Etienne noted that the organization stands ready to support countries in making the 30-30-30 Compact for Universal Health a reality. The Compact calls for intensifying and accelerating the efforts of the Region to achieve universal health by 2030.
