PAHO Director calls for accelerating and expanding testing for COVID-19 in the Americas
The Director of the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), Carissa F. Etienne, called for accelerating and expanding testing for COVID-19 in countries of the Americas. “We need a clearer view of where the virus is circulating and how many people have been infected in order to guide our actions,” she said.
PAHO warns of potential blood shortages during the COVID-19 pandemic
PAHO warned that countries in the Americas face potential shortages of blood for transfusions due to a significant reduction in voluntary blood donations during this time of the COVID-19 pandemic.
New guideline to use reliance for emergency use authorization of medicines and other technologies during COVID-19 pandemic
PAHO held a virtual meeting on COVID-19 regulatory update to present and discuss the document “Reliance for Emergency Use Authorization of Medicines and Other Health Technologies in a Pandemic (e.g. COVID-19)”.
PAHO’s timely support for scaling up effective testing of COVID-19 through the PAHO Strategic Fund
The PAHO Strategic Fund has supported Member States in increasing access to COVID-19 diagnostic kits through pooled procurement, securing over 500,000 RT-PCR tests. Another 1.5 million tests will be delivered over the next month.

On April 24 2020, PAHO held a webinar on the State of the World's Nursing Report to present the main results of the report about the nursing situation in the Region of the Americas. Nurses from the Ministries of Health, members of the PAHO/WHO Collaborating Centers and from Nursing Associations participated.
