AUDIT-SBI Virtual Course now available

The AUDIT-SBI Virtual Course (Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test - Screening and Brief Intervention) is now available as a Self-Learning course in the Virtual Classroom. 

This course consists of 5 Modules and you are free to self-enroll and access all the resources:

  • Module 1. Alcohol use in Latin America: social factors, epidemiology, patterns of use, and the health-disease-care process
  • Module 2. The Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT) – Introduction and Application
  • Module 3. Brief Intervention in conjunction with AUDIT
  • Module 4. Implementation of AUDIT-SBI
  • Module 5. Training for trainers

The aim of this self-learning course is to train non-specialist health professionals in implementing the AUDIT and corresponding SBI, encourage primary care givers to incorporate the AUDIT-SBI program in their daily routines, and empower health professionals to organize trainings for others.

The course includes introductory videos by Dr. Francisco Becerra (Assistant Director of the Pan American Health Organization), and Dr. Maristela Monteiro (Senior Advisor for Alcohol and Substance Abuse).

The AUDIT is a questionnaire developed and validated by an international group of researchers and physicians specializing in addiction, under the auspices of the World Health Organization (WHO), in response to the overwhelming public health burden that it is associated with problematic alcohol consumption worldwide.

A Brief Intervention, according to the World Health Organization, is a “therapeutic strategy focused on changing the behavior of users in relation to their problematic use of alcohol”, and is considered “brief” because it takes about 3-15 minutes and can be administered by a trained health professional who might not be an expert in the treatment of addictions, but taking into account that brief interventions are not designed for treating people with alcohol dependence.
