PAHO Director meets with Humphrey Humphrey Fellows

In early June, Dr. Carissa Etienne, Director of the Pan American Health Organization, the World Health Organization’s Regional Office of the Americas (PAHO/WHO), met with the five Hubert H. Humphrey Fellows who undertook their professional affiliation at the Organization’s Washington, DC headquarters. 

During the meeting, Dr. Etienne thanked the Fellows for their contribution to PAHO and bid them farewell as they concluded their two-month work experience, challenging them to continue their important work in public health.  This year’s group came from five countries, three in the Region of the Americas (Brazil, Paraguay and Uruguay) and two from Asia (Malaysia and Nepal). 

The Fellows worked in several technical areas on projects related to international cooperation projects, HIV/AIDS, health economics, substance abuse in adolescents and the family, gender and life course areas.  Since 2012, the PAHO Human Resources for Health Fellowships team has collaborated with the Institute of International Education (IIE), administrators of the U.S. Department of State-sponsored Fulbright Humphrey program, and with host universities such as Emory and Virginia Commonwealth, to place those fellows with a public health interest at PAHO for their professional affiliation. 

As mid-career professionals from around the world, the Humphrey Fellows bring a rich diversity of knowledge, skills and regional expertise to the Organization.
