PAHO carried out the virtual launch of the course on Age-Friendly Environments. This course offers the necessary tools to strengthen national, provincial, and/or local programs that seek to transform the communities in which older persons live and develop.

In recent years, the global age-friendly community has grown and strengthened as more cities and communities commit to being better places to age. This growth can be seen reflected in the WHO Global Network of Age-Friendly Cities and Communities. With more than 1,600 cities and communities worldwide, the Network reaches over 330 million people worldwide. In the Region of the Americas, this growth has occurred exponentially in recent years, reaching today to represent more than half of all its members in 15 countries.

With financial support from the Government of Canada, PAHO and the WHO developed this training initiative, which will be available on the PAHO/WHO Virtual Public Health Campus in English, Spanish, and Portuguese. The course also provides strategies to encourage participation in the WHO Global Network of Age-Friendly Cities and Communities. To respond to the challenges related to population aging, the United Nations Decade of Healthy Aging (2021-2030) proposes to foster communities that support the capabilities of older persons and promote healthy aging.

The webinar had simultaneous translation in Spanish, English, and Portuguese.
